Eyes and eyesight are really God – gifted. Taking good care of our eye health is vital to overall health, wellness and well – being. Our eyes have never been under as much strain as they are today. We spend hours staring at a computer, smartphones and other screens, which overtire the eyes and can cause them to become dry, sore, burn and can even load to a headache, neckache or backache.

Our modern lifestyle has meant that we hardly look into the distance, don’t blink as much as we used to, and meals have become little more than something to fit into our day as and as when time allows.

There are things you can do to help keep your eyes healthy and make sure you are seeing your best. Follow these tips to maintain healthy eyes:

1. Eat Healthy Foods

Be sure to have plenty of dark, leafy green spinach, eggs, pumpkins, carrots, sweet potatoes and collard greens. Make sure that you include foods rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, copper and zinc to your diet.

 Fish is also great for your eyes. Eating fish that are high in omega – 3 fatty acids – like salmon, tuna, and halibut – is good for your strengthens cell membranes.

2. Have Regular Eye Exams

Most people wait until they experience eyesight problems to get eye exams. Sometimes, that can be too late. Getting eye exams early can help diagnose problems before they become severe. In fact, most vision defects can be corrected when detected early. Receiving regular eye exams regardless of vision acuity can help detect serious eye problems at the earliest stage – when they are most treatable.

Most eye care professionals recommend that you have a comprehensive eye exam everyone to two years, depending on your age, risk factors and whether you currently wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. During an exam, each eye is examined for signs of serious eye issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and detached retinas, among other conditions.

3. Stop Smoking

Smoking has long been known to cause heart disease and lung cancer; however, many people don’t realize that, smoking can contribute to blindness.

Smoking affects the small blood vessels in your eyes and also significantly increases the risk of developing cataracts and Age – related macular degeneration (AMD). Additionally, smoking can reduce the number of antioxidants that are beneficial to your eyes.

4. Wear Protective Eyewear

You may wear goggles to protect your eyes from chlorine in the swimming pool, but what about other occasions when your eyes may be at risk? Safety glasses and goggles are designed to protect your eyes during certain activities, like playing sports, doing construction work, or doing home repairs.

5. Wear Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses – even on cloudy days! Be sure to look for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 % of both UVA and UVB radiation. These lights can have harmful effects on the eyelid, cornea, lens and retina.

6. Exercise for Your Eyes

Since eyes have muscles, they could use some exercises to remain in good shape. Eye exercises are great when done in the morning, when your eyes feel tired and before retiring to bed. If you’re consistent for a month, you may start noticing a difference. There are very little credible scientific evidence suggesting that eye exercises can improve vision. 7. Take Regular Breaks

8. Lower the Screen

You can reduce your risk of suffering from dry eyes while working at a computer simply by positioning the screen just below eye level. This will mean that your eyes will naturally close slightly when you’re viewing the screen, which minimizes fluid evaporation.

9. Keep Your Hands and Lenses Clean

Your eyes are especially vulnerable to germs and infections. Even things that just irritate your eyes can affect your vision. For those reasons, you should always wash your hands before touching your eyes or handling your contact lenses.

10. Stay Fit

Exercising for at least twenty minutes a day is healthy for your entire body, including your eyes. Improved blood circulation is beneficial to the small blood vessels in the eyes as it removes harmful substances that may have been deposited.

Cardio exercise also increases the flow of blood to the optic nerve and the retina. Because of these effects, overall eye health and vision can be improved, but it’s especially beneficial to people with glaucoma.

Beyond 50, vision can be challenging. However, it can be improved with a good lifestyle, healthy nutrition and regular eye check-up.
